Relaunch of the Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences website using TYPO3, with a focus on a user-centred structure, robust editorial processes, multilingual support (German/English) and university-specific integrations such as the course finder and SSO.

Die Ausgangslage

Womit die Hochschule zu uns kam.

The existing website needed to be modernised and consolidated in terms of structure, design and functionality. At the same time, it was necessary to bring together the various requirements from central and decentralised departments – such as specialist departments, administration, communications and IT – within a scalable system. The challenge lay in accommodating numerous decentralised requirements without diluting the overall logic of the website.

Consistently mapping decentralised requirements

The website must accommodate a wide range of requirements from both central and decentralised departments whilst maintaining consistency. Custom solutions should not undermine the overall structure.

Editorial processes and access

Editors need to be able to work efficiently. This required a clear system of roles and permissions, as well as reliable access.

Multilingualism from the very start

The website architecture had to be designed to be bilingual (German/English) from the outset, including translation management.

System integrations

Central data sources such as HISinOne and SAP should be integrated so that research and personnel data can be utilised without the need for redundant maintenance work.

University-specific use cases

Functional areas such as the course descriptions had to be effective in terms of functionality whilst also being easy to maintain from an editorial perspective.

Das Vorgehen

Wie wir es gelöst haben.

We implemented the project using an agile approach in sprint cycles, with use-case workshops, regular reviews and close coordination with HSRW IT.

Concept and UX

We developed the information architecture, navigation concept and responsive screen design. During stakeholder workshops, we systematically documented use cases, requirements and the roadmap.

Component and page type system

We implemented a responsive UI design for desktop and mobile. Clearly defined page types and reusable components form the basis for scalability and meet the needs of the business units.

TYPO3, content management and workflows

We implemented templates and editorial content elements. Multilingual support (German/English) and translation management were implemented, as was a roles and permissions framework to ensure secure content management.

Course Finder

We have redesigned the course finder, including the layout of the detailed pages. We have implemented the logic for contact details and contact forms using reusable modules.

HISinOne and the Research Portal

We have fully integrated HISinOne via the HiO Publisher middleware to automatically import research data. We display this data on a new research portal.

SSO and SAP integration

We have integrated OpenID Connect for identity management and single sign-on (SSO). An SAP integration will follow to import personal data to serve as the basis for the directory of staff.

The relaunch reduces complexity, speeds up processes and creates a robust foundation for the ongoing development of the HSRW website.
